The TOEFL iBT is meant to test an individual’s mastery and understanding of English. The test consists of four parts:
The reading section consists of 3 passages, each of which is approximately 700 words in length. Each of the passages has between 11 and 15 questions and the total number of questions is between 39 and 42. A few of the questions are worth more than one point.
The listening section consists of 2 conversations and 4 lectures. The conversations are 2 to 3 minutes in length and are followed by 5 questions each. The lectures are 4 to 6 minutes in length and are followed by 6 questions each. The total number of questions is 34.
The speaking section consists of 6 tasks. The first two are independent tasks and the third through sixth are integrated tasks. In the independent tasks, test-takers are asked questions about their personal experiences, opinions, preferences, or the like. They are given 15 seconds to prepare a response and 45 seconds to respond. In two of the integrated tasks, test-takers first read a short passage, then listen to a short conversation or lecture on the same topic, and then respond to a question about the material just presented. They are given 30 seconds to prepare a response and 1 minute to respond. In the final two integrated tasks, test-takers listen to a somewhat longer conversation or lecture and are asked to respond to a question about the material just presented. They are given 20 seconds to prepare a response and 1 minute to respond.
The writing section consists of 2 tasks. The first task is an integrated task, while the second task is an independent task. In the integrated task, test-takers first read a passage of moderate length, then listen to a talk on the same topic, and then respond to a question about the material just presented. Suitable responses are between 150 and 225 words in length. In the independent task, test-takers are asked questions about their personal experiences, opinions, preferences, or the like. Suitable responses are at least 300 words in length.
For most test takers, there is one unscored section added to either the Listening or Reading section. Some test takers will do extra reading, while others will do extra listening. Students who do extra reading will have two additional passages and be given 40 minutes to complete them. Students who do extra listening will have one extra conversation and two extra lectures, which will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. However, it is critical to understand that there is no way to know exactly which passages are scored and which are unscored. For example, if a student gets extra reading for a total of 5 passages, the unscored section might be the first section, the middle section, or the last section. Because there is no way to know which passages will be scored, the test taker must perform at a high level on all sections of the iBT.
